Brain (median sagittal section)

This is the standard text-book sagittal section. Though the brain is a relatively large organ, there are not any blood vessels inside. What a surprise ! Instead, the brain surface is covered with a network of blood vessels (already removed in this specimen) which may go down into the folds, and therefore facilitate the exchange of materials between blood and the neurones. With this highly folded structural design, more neurones can be packed in a small space.  [Back to Human anatomy menu]
